Trees, Here They Come!

First there were the smaller trees, the flowering ones and the strong and tall Maple. Soon after there was one. Then two, and finally three BIG trees planted...

Up until about a week ago, looking outside through the kitchen window, was painful. We used to see lush huge trees blanketing our lawn and acting as an umbrella to the house. All sight of the road was blocked off. It was like being in the country in the city.

And then September 21st, 2018 everything changed. In a matter of seconds 150 year old soaring trees were ripped out of the ground leaving a wasteland of broken, tangled trees and root balls. Eventually, after the cleanup, all that remained were stumps and huge holes in the ground, an open space for gawkers. The house, and once we moved back in our lives, were laid bare for all to see.

We knew we had to do something about this because being outside was more than depressing. It was like taking a fresh hit time and time again. After many friends and neighbours recommended various places to buy trees, we ended up with Fallowfield Tree Farm. We just had a good feeling about them and the advice they gave us. Karen helped us choose the best trees for the area and to close off some of the gaping hole the tornado left behind. She suggested a mixture of flowering bushes and mature trees to give us a start in building up our back yard. And last week / weekend, everything changed.

Nigel and Kenny planted with care, a sense of humour and years of experience. Before we knew it, we had the beginnings of green and the promise of some flowers instead of barren wasteland. We won't be able to have the huge 150 + foot trees back in our lifetime but we made a start for those who will live here afterwards. As Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “When we plant a tree, we are doing what we can to make our planet a more wholesome and happier dwelling-place for those who come after us if not for ourselves.”  I can't imagine living in a place where there are no trees.

Now we don't have to. We'll watch the Lilacs and Serviceberry bloom year after year, the Spruces spread out to fill those gaps to the street, and my new favourite, (thanks Karen!), the Hemlock, grow every which (in its wild and crazy) way right in the middle.

And by the end of the weekend, there were 3!!

Instead of looking outside and my heart breaking at the devastation, now I'm looking out every second I can, smiling, making sure they have a drink when Mother Nature takes a break.  We're looking forward to watching them thrive!

Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth. They do not preach learning and precepts, they preach, undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life.” ― Hermann Hesse
